A bit about our Preset Camps available for Scout Troops

Camp Wheeler offers a unique blend of traditional and modern Scouting activities. Camp programs are based on the Scouting Promise and Law and youth are encouraged to participate fully at all times. Campers develop outdoor skills, leadership abilities, and confidence in themselves. Our programs help develop youth’s ability to think critically, to plan, to innovate.  As outlined in our Scout Law, youth are taught to be positive and trustworthy.  We embrace values like kindness and acceptance while making meaningful contributions to creating a better world. Scout groups would enjoy the opportunity to earn badges while working on plant/animal identification, survival training, conservation activities, shelter building and more.

OUR HISTORY

Our camp is named in honour of Lewis Wheeler who was a Troop Leader prior to WWII where he was a member of "C" Co. of the Queen's Own Rifles.  It was his wish that "...when I get rich, I am going to buy this spot and then the 26th will have a camp of their own."

Lewis was killed in action on April 25th, 1945 but his dream never died as he laid the foundation of what was to come.

In 1949, to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the Hamilton 26th Scout Group, the leaders of the group purchased land on Peach (Kabakwa) Lake and established a camp where the younger Scouts could go camping and the senior scouts could go canoeing.

Founded by Harry Bryant and three Scouts who trekked to Macs Point on Lake Kabakwa., only 2 other cottages and another small boy’s camp existed at that time.

The camp, now in it’s 73rd year, continues to flourish thanks to the ongoing dedication of generations of volunteers.
